DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION

Information from a researcher:
In the letterbook, measurements for calculating
duty are in covados [Covs]. G.
D. Urquhart, in his 1872 book Dues and Charges on Shipping in Foreign
Ports: a manual of reference for shipowners, shipbrokers & shipmasters
(2nd edition, p.711) gives length measurements of Brazil as the
covado and the vara. One covado = 26.24
inches; 4 covados = 3 yards. The
discrepancy between 26.24 inches and ¾ yard is not explained. William Gordon in his 1765 book The Universal Account and
Complete Merchant ( 2nd edition, p.63) explains Surat measures
have a greater and lesser covid. Most
piece goods are sold by the lesser covid of 27 inches. Indeed, the figure of 27
inches matches the quantities found in the letterbook: a piece of printed
calico of 28 yards would equal 371/3 covados; 50
pieces would contain 18662/3 covados (rounded down as
1866 in the letterbook).

In reference to the remarks accompanying
Samples p this conveyance you will observe
that the following ground Colors are now
most in vogue, vizt sky Blue, Light Bright Red,
Pink and Nankeen Color may be also introduced.
Green & yellows are extremely dull of
they came out with others the sale of the
whole is much injured, therefore we would
recommend you not to send any more Prints
out in these Colours for the present.
If the Pattern of MG [M stylized] 85 @ 88 (say 4 Cases p Diana)
were in Colours now recommended, an excellent
price would be obtained for a Shipment of
12 or 16 Cases, the Purchaser has promised not
to give any Patterns of the good style p Diana.
of which there was only one Ps in each case,
therefore you may send out without any fear
of competition.
The five cases fancy checks
p [Jno?] Cullen are also sold as p note of Sales
at foot, we were obliged to let the Case of
3 colors go at the same price as the 2 Colours
or the purchaser would not have them and to sell
a case singly we did not deem it proper for after
we came to show them we had our doubts if they
would meet the fancy of the public equal to our
expectations; in our warehouse they did not look
so well, the cloth was rather too ordinary –
of the Cambc Red Marones we have only sold
one Case, they are well suited for the trade =

=between this and
been cut up by the Privateers, the light Red same as
Pattern appears to be most liked.
The dark fancy Rainbows is a style nearly approaching
to what has generally a regular sale here, but the
Cloth is so ordinary that we as yet have only had
offered for them 4$500 p Ps & for the present we despair
of any higher offer. Printed HKfs [handkerchiefs]
& Shawles [sic] same
as Patterns already sent you are yet in great demand
We beg again to call your particular attention to
the Patterns we send you & the Colors recommended.
The ground Colors of the 4 Cases Prints p Diana
were not liked here. there was only one good ground
Colour in the whole Shipment. Pattern of which we
herewith transmit turned down in the Sample Book
[Inserted sample; margin notation: “(Turned down pattern)”] The patterns would all be [equally?]
good and saleable if they came
out in the following Colours for
the Ground. Sky Blue, Pink,
light red & same as pattern alluded
to above, which is a most delicate

=card 8$ @ 8$600 p Ps would have been easily
obtained. Perhaps the Colours that we have
recommended above will come out much
dearer than the others. but as the fancy of
the Purchasers will be suited much more
than adidquate [sic] prices can be obtained & we have
been assured 9$600 @ 10$ for the above assortment
on arrival would easily be obtained. The Cloth
must not be worse than Patterns inclosed [sic]—
[6+ samples; margin note illegible due to losses]
The Shopkeepers complain that the
Colours of all your Prints are not sufficiently
lively, which you will observe by the enclosed
Pattern Book x. the Red in the flowers if
lighter would give the Pink a more imposing
and lively appearance.
We also enclose a Pattern of your Cambc
Black & Marones [glue from removed sample] to show
that the light [glue continued] proportion
of the Case same [glue continued] as sample
was most liked and met better sale than
the Darker Ps--

The enclosed are patterns of prints selected from
your Shipment p Grace the Colors of which are
very unsuitable and quite unsaleable, indeed
the Purchasers will scarcely have Prints in
similar Colors at any price, therefore we
recommend you in future not to put a Single
piece in an assortment on any account. We
have already warned you about these Colours,
and beg leave again to press it upon your
recollection.

suited to the present taste of this mkt, the
Case ought to be assorted equally for a future
shipment, say 20 Ps Sky Blue, 15 ps light red, same
as pattern & 15 Ps Pink, which would be an
excellent assortment and not fail to sell at
good prices. however we do not confine you
exactly to the Patterns enclosed if you should

The difference in price between No. 41 (6$500) &

= Our last respects were of the 12 Octr since when
more of your favors are to hand nor have we
had any thing of moment to communicate,
our Goods market having during the space that
has elapsed experienced no improvement what-
=ever. – The quantity of Printed calicos
on hand is still pretty extensive & a consider=
=able Sum must be lost on that article from
the Styles becoming more & more stale. For
guidance it is only regular small Ship=
=ments of new patterns that are likely to
do any good & from the circumstance of
many of our neighbors being so annoyed
with their late transactions & aversion to
recommend [fresh?] goods we have no hesita=
=tion in saying that as future supplies
will in consequence be but Sparing a little
good may be done in the manner just
pointed out. But it is not the article
of most colours that invariably pays best,
indeed the fewer colours so much better, only
show the object distinctly & avoid too much
delicacy. We have this day forwarded you
a small parcel which Mr. Cockshott will send
on from
the Styles that have latterly been more enquired
after especially the dark blue grounds with

you what has been doing in such goods of late--
the styles you say as having in preparation are still
suitable, but generally speaking our purchasers will
only look at new goods, which makes it difficult
to recommend any particular styles from this
side, as a rule however the taste runs more as a
bold striking effect than on fine workmanship
The better to enable you to judge however we
shall furnish you with patterns from time to
time of what have been sold here

Extract of a letter from Bradshaw Wanklyn

-------------
On 3rd Inst. had the pleasure of your esteemed of
30 Nov. p Mersey with Invoice of 39 Cases of Prints
which instantly sold by the patterns the new fan-
cy Stripes & plaids we conceive to be well sold.
the Style is admired the assortment would be
improved by leaving out a few of the most
gloomy patterns & substituting the lively ones
as the Red & Blue Checks—The Single Color
Sets & Stripes look much better in the piece than
we were prepared to expect from the patterns.
Should we have any in the vessel now expected
we make no doubt of obtaining 230 p yd-
& perhaps 240 rs they are got up remarkably [sic]
well (Lindsay Lustre) We should have great pleasure
when we are certain you are supplying us
liberally you cannot be more anxious than
ourselves, that we should do some profitable
business for you—

Rio 15 March 1828—
For the Single Colors p Columbian & Brothers 246 @ 254 &c
we fully expect will fetch 240 rs.
The Check Muslins will also do well, the
Style is excellent and would be improved on a
plain Cambric, fancy Muslins are not so
much in vogue as formerly.
The New Neutral Stripes approach too near
our old Style of pattern and will not answer
we confess the Colour, to be beautiful

440rs P readily, while we shall have difficulty
in obtaining 340 rs for the Neutral Stps (DB 276 @ 287).

gret exceedingly you did not substitute them

Your late shipments or at least the greater proportion
appear to us to be loose Colours our Customers are aware
of this, you will need to be guarded in your future sendings
not to return us the same patterns, while the demand is
lively this is not of much importance; we are apprehensive
from the quantities arriving by each vessel from Liverpool
the contrary will soon be the case and we have to complain of
the French introducing double the quantity of any other
Period--
You will do well to vary the Style all in your power avoiding
those colours we have already pointed out to you there are a great
variety of patterns Single Colours on good Cloth will always suit
the taste of this place for some time we have been expecting
a supply, always bear in mind new patterns are sought after--

We fear the colours of your late Shipments will not
stand washing and when this becomes generally
known we may find difficulty in disposing of si-
milar styles. you will do well to alter the style as much
as lays in your power with those patterns you cannot
warrant fast; we are persuaded you may with safe
-ty send us a handsome assortment of single Colour, on both
fine and ordinary Cloths be particularly [sic particular?] in selecting
tasty & easy styles, crowded patterns are not admired, par-
ticularly when the Colours are either Chocolate or Dark
Lilac; Blue, Pink & Red are the favourite
Colours and Yellow when used sparingly, a bright
Lilac assists the assortment, we have no wish to receive
expensive Printing unless a Case or two occasionally.
we want a lively pleasing style, that will leave you
a fair profit if sold under 400 rs p yd Exch 31[d on top of 31] you
must bear in mind our opponents are receiving
by each vessel largely and that we have reason to ex-
pect the competition will oblige us to cut very close, you
may rely on our utmost exertions for your Interest.
The few bits of pattern enclosed will show the Style
now much admired—

added to those lately introduced from Glasgow from
whence more may be expected, we think there is
just reason to apprehend we shall soon be overstocked,
while you continue to furnish us with new & suit=

most others, our intention is not to look on but to use
every means to keep pace with your shipments;
the decline in the Exch is impossible to provide against, unless
we could make Cash Sales, which is totally impossible a
little while ago we thought 30[d above 30] a safe calculation, and that
any alteration would be to our advantage, today we
are grieved to find more than 29[d above 30] is not obtainable and have
our doubts whether this will be maintained, you may
conceive the unpleasant situation which this leaves

We think well of the appearance of this style,
and make no doubt they will sell when
dispatched, the single Colors, would be
much improved if another Color could be
introduced in the white space, in the form
of a beautiful Stripe—
This style is become much neglected you must

confirm it. the two new patterns introduced in
the shipment pr Robt Fennie are much better

a good business in this market to any extent
in Prints, it is absolutely necessary to have

not render it more saleable, after having

pr “Jane” the patterns are not objectionable but
our purchasers will not give us a saving price

admit of it—of the patterns in this shipment
we must observe that 683, 684, 714, 715 progressive
numbers – will sell for as much as the 415
Colours of the same style. the greens as 679-

them in the piece we cannot say what sales
we are likely to make of them,- we never
know this market- so dull for prints, if any
would command a sale such styles as
the present shipment ought certainly to
do so—we have lately observed that many
of our most extensive purchasers have
evinced great shyness about false colours
the people in the interior we believe are
beginning to open their eyes to their real
interest, & even prefer paying a consider-
able advance in price for colours which
we can warrant to be fast, this is a subject
worthy of your consideration, for the
time will come sooner or later when
loose colours on good cambric Cloths
will not be saleable for more than
those of the most ordinary description.

unobjectionable. We have received a commu-

patterns & we approve of his recommendation to
you to reject the buff patterns of which you sent
musters in the box, that colour is not at all
suitable, if approached to near to a light brown
we want a bright buff or orange similar to the
patterns we have lately sent you.
We regret that you did not send the 10 Cases of

buff as neither that colour nor the orange is
necessary to compleate [sic] the assortment

sold at 330rs. The new patterns are very good & we think
the plan you propose to adopt viz: of introducing
two new patterns by every shipment as they come round
will be more advantageous to you than delaying
your shipments until [sic] an entire new set of patterns
can be produced. The 7 Cases of single & 2 Colours
are sold at 245rs. The patterns are very good but there
is not much variety, & 8 or 10 pieces of bright orange
added to these cases would improve the assortment.
we could have sold immediately 20 or 30 Cases of
these Prints. of the Furnitures we have sold 8 cases

sold when dispatched the patterns are very good

good. No 14 @ 15 the patterns with the exceptions of the
light are good the light grods show too much un=
printed cloth. Nos. 15 @ 19 Furnitures some very good
patterns but the selection can be improved
Nos 20 @ 24 dk blue orge white & yellow sprigs are very
good – checks are also much admired on these
grounds & would improve the assortment
Nos 25 @ 26 are bad styles & will never in our opinion
answer in this market.

All the patterns in this shipment are unexception
=able, but the cloth is still complained of as being
very ordinary. We think this cloth will do very well
for the covered grounds, but you had better print the
white grounds on a fine cloth & put a little finish
in it to hide the quality. We have sold a part of this
shipment at 260 & expect to sell the remainder when
dispatched. This market is becoming very much
overstocked with fine prints, we have not yet sold
any those pr Leisure. The Bengal Stripes are not
so saleable now as formerly. if those pr Leisure had
been assorted with small checks & stripes farther
apart we might have sold them all immediately.
We think that we might readily dispose of from
20 to 25 cases pr month of such prints as the 20 Cases

variety in the patterns, some of the very old approved
patterns will do quite as well as the newest –

The 10 Cases all light grounds D 431 @ 440 are sold at
280rs to one person, if there had not been so many old
patterns in the assortment we should have got more
for them. these patterns are rather too large for the taste
of the people at present- We send you pr Judith
a parcel containing the following patterns. viz
No. 1. A selection of the best patterns from your late
shipments. No. 2. Two patterns of Stripes which are
not much liked, they are too confused if there was
less work in them they would do very well.
No. 3. This might be made into a very good pattern
by taking out the trail work & leaving the sprig
with the small dots on the ground. if the sprigs were
a little smaller it would be improved, the small
dots or stars or sets as fillings in the single sprig
patterns are now very much liked & you must
introduce a great many of them in all your
assortments. No. 4. A new pattern which is not
much liked in consequence of the trail work
being too indistinct, it would be an excellent
pattern if you took out the trail leaving only the
sprig which is marked round with ink in the
[muster?] the ground might be filled up with
dots or small sets, but not too close together.
No. 5. These are excellent patterns & you may con-

[these?] goods, the blue looks much brighter than ours in
consequence of the white being so much clearer & the finest
of these Furnitures is better than ours – we put inside No. 7
a few musters of your late blue ground blotches, the white is
complained of & it injures the other goods, if you cannot
make it as clear as the two peices which are with yours
you had better send all the Blues in fancy pin &c grounds.

The two new patterns in the fine fancies p. Hasburgh
are very good particularly the small sprig with a
dotted trail. this pattern will be very much approved
by our customers. As we have now a good quantity
of these prints on hand we would recommend you
to pause for a short time with the best fancies and
when you recommence you had better send an entire
new set of patterns by which means we shall probably
be able to raise the price again, but while any of the
old patterns remain in the assortment our customers
steadily refuse to give any advance – The color
which you call range in the 20 Cases of Single and
two colors pr [Horsburgh?] is too dark our buyers do
not like it. In compliance with your request
we send you by this packet a small parcel of
musters of new swiss muslins which have been very
much approved of here. We think you will like
the styles & that they will enable you to form some
new patterns for other markets as well as this. The
broad stripes are rather too large for 7/8 Cambric as for
us if you reduced the patterns to one half the size
they would do very well – all the other patterns
are much admired & will do very well for us
of cource [sic] you are aware that the [dial?] of olive pinwork
will not do, those colors must be replaced by a
bright lilac Blue or Buff these muslins were
sold at 700 rs p covo & 3 or 5 cases p month of new

colors by substituting the Red with the darkest lilac
& of this style in 3 colors without red you might send

Rio de Janeiro 23rd March 1839
There is a great want of fine dark ground prints here.
We are not getting on so well as we expected with
the sale of the low prints as 645 @ 54. The chief objection
to them now is their having so many light grounds
in your next sendings of this quality but in each
case, 30 pieces with covered grounds, 20 pieces with
blotches & 10 pieces Lt grounds. We notice some of the
blue ground blotches in 653 are the best color you ever
sent us and they are much approved you need not
send more than 15 or 20 pieces of a color in a case – all
these prints will be preferred if folded in broad
plates like the best prints. Some of our customers have
noticed the very inferior quality of cloth which is
mixed with your usual quality of Cambric in 665 @ 674
you must carefully avoid this in future as it would
soon bring our best prints into discredit.

pattern which we send you now by this packet
this style will do very well but the colors
particularly the Pink & Lilac are too faint,

The Buffs in R 51 @ 60 as well as in 76 @ 84 are very
objectionable, that color is only liked as a ground
work for furnitures or 3 & 4 color fancies and these
should be sent but sparingly. The colors which
you have sent as buff & orange in R 21 @ 30 are not
at all liked whereas the buff ground blotches
in R 61 @ 65 are an excellent color, you must pay
great attention to this. The 2 & 3 color fancies
R 87 @ 96 will not do all the patterns which show
much of the white and particularly the large
sets ought to be on covered grounds or blotches
Pink blue or lilac (& buff as in R 61 @ 65
Prints in the style of R 51 @ 60 or 76 @ 84 in 2 lilacs

advisable whenever you can send an assortment

patterns in each case & you might send a few
cases of the old asst by the vessels – the new patterns
in R 112 @ 120 are highly approved of by many of our
customers, but all admit that they would be
better if on a smaller scale. These large patterns
would do very well on 9/8 Fine Muslins in two,
three, & four colors equal quantities of each

patterns which on white grounds are objectionable. we sent
by this packet a small parcel containing musters from
this assortment, those marked X are decidedly bad, & two
patterns marked O are the best. All the other patterns are
likewise very good, & you may send any quantity assorted
20 ps blue ground 12 pink 10 Buff 8 Lilac 10 white. The blue
Pink & buff may be half in the blotches & half covered grounds
the lilac had better be all covered grounds as the blotches
are liable to mildew. we also send a few small musters to
show you the most approved patterns for the covered ground
the style of the shipment 122 @ 131 being quite different
to your former sendings will enable us to raise our prices
with more facility. the style of 112 @ 121 is also much approved
and we recommend you to continue sending in both styles
on the best cloth, but to keep them quite distinct, it would
be better to alternate your shipments of them. Your fine
Prints are now got into good repute and we expect to
advance our prices on the next, such is the demand for
them. that we have sold some of the old ones 776 @ 785
at 320 rs and expect to close the sale of them at that rate.
The Prints R 76 @ 84 would have been much more saleable
if the patterns had been more distinct. The grounds are
very good, but the sets ought to have more body of color
so as to show the pattern more clearly. We have seen prints
in single colors on Cambc cloth which imitate these goods
very well – the grounds are in Pin work and small
fancy patterns with large bold sets in the style of
R 132 @ 41 these goods will come cheaper than yours
and will sell very well. The patterns of the Blue
ground prints p Rapid 157 @ 166 are better than your
former shipments, and the musters also are very
good, but the ground is still a shade too dark and
these goods will be more saleable on the 2d cambc cloth

we meant you to send some patterns as

Our stock of Prints is now much reduced & our customers are
all anxiously waiting for the next arrivals. New fancies on Cambric
cloth will sell readily. If we were to force off the Blue grounds
with orange & yellow sprigs the loss on them would be very great
we think it more advisable to wait for a good opportunity
The demand for these prints at present is for Cambric cloths
chiefly. We have only 6 Cases of the old Furnitures left we
could get very good prices for new patterns but 2/3rd of them ought
to be broad stripes.

Rio de Janeiro 9th Augst 1839
The late arrivals from Liverpool have brought very few
fine prints & there is consequently a great want of them in the
market. Covered grounds with sets or sprigs are alone
enquired for – white grounds are not saleable at good prices
in consequence of the place having been inundated with
them this year.

The 10 Cases of new fancies R 226 @ 235 are all sold at 330 pr yd
& we could have sold twice as many at the same price the
patterns are excellent the blue grounds with orange &
yellow sets 216 @ 223 are also very good patterns but we
shall not get more than 280 or 290 for them many other
houses receive them & are in good credit with this description
of prints. these are a great improvement on the last you sent
& they will soon be sold when seen in the price you are
right in sending the blue of your next a shade darker
they will be preferred for it the 3 Colour Unions R 206 @ 215 are
good patterns but similar goods have recently been sold very
low & we anticipate some difficulty in getting 270 for them.

The 10 Cases of 3, 4, & 5 Color Cambric
immediately at 330 rs the patterns are excellent but our customers
still complain of there being too many light grounds & nearly all
the lilac grounds (in blotches) are mildewed. This Color ought only to
be sent in pin work or fancy covered grounds – the 2nd Cambric 2 & 3
color fancies 282 @ 291 were all sold at 280 rs the assortment is
spoiled by the 10 ps of light grounds, if they had been single color
sets or trails on covered grounds they would have done very well, the
styles of these prints is good but they must be all covered grounds blue
& pink are the best colors but a few pieces of lilac orange & buff will
always improve the assortment. We have complaints from many of
our customers that the colors of your best prints are not so fast as they
used to be & we have had proofs that they are not very fast, you must
endeavour to remedy this, for if once your fine prints get into discredit
we shall never again get such prices for them as we have lately
obtained. the Blue ground prints R 266 @ 271 are very good patterns
and will be by many preferred to the larger patterns as 216 @ 225
but the yellow is not so well printed as in 216 @ 225 there ought not to
be any appearance of green where the yellow is printed as it is a most
objectionable color. wherever the white shows it sets off the pattern
& is very much approved of. You might assort these patterns as 266 @ 271

Chintz Prints R 302 @ 306 at a price which would give you
encouragement to send more, all our customers have seen them
but few would make any offer for them & we have deemed it
most advisable to accept the highest offer we could get (320 rs pr yd)

been black, chocolate, brown & red or marone we might have gotten

3 & 4 Colour Prints R 236 @ 245 at 270 rs pr yard we consider these
prints excessively dear particularly on comparing them with R 226 @
235 which are so much superior the printing in 236 @ 245 is much
too expensive for the cloth & we shall not be able to obtain a renumeration
price for it there ought not to be more than three colours in the greater
proportion of the assortment the 2 Colour sets on covered grounds
256 @ 265 are all sold at 280 @ 290 we can sell more of these but
the light grounds must be omitted altogether the checks & stripes

The musters of dark blue orange & yellow which you sent in
the pattern box for Pickwick are very good patterns & the ground
work is a better colour than your previous sendings but you
must also assort a few smaller patterns & it will be an improve-
ment if half the assortment shows some white in the pattern
we would also recommend you to send one half of each shipment
to be finished as your best Cambric
ed soft as your last, the patterns of the blue ground neutrals
are good but the cloth appears so ordinary that we do not like to
recommend them until we see them in the piece.

The patterns of the new Blue ground Neutrals 374 @ 383 are very
good, but the price is so high that we cannot hold out any pros-
pect of our being able to get a profit on them if they had been
on second Cambric cloth instead of 2nd 74 we should have been
able to obtain a much better price in proportion, expensive
printing will never answer on very ordinary cloth. the two new
patterns in the
too confused something more plain & simple would be preferred
and there are too many of the Lilac grounds in blotches this colour is
so liable to mildew that it will always be safest to send it in fancy
or pin grounds the blue & buff grounds in this lot are very well done.

will admit of some improvement there ought to be from 25 to 30 ps
of the 2 reds in each Case 15 pieces of 2 lilacs & 15 pieces 2 lilacs and
red the lilac & Blue & 2 Blues are not much liked in half of the
Cases you might put about 5 pieces of them – the Cambric fancies
pr Freeland 434 @ 443 will soon be sold at 320 pr yard – the
sale of 444 @ 453 is much injured by the 10 ps of Lt ground 2

sale in the new year we shall endeavour to dispose of them but
cannot hold out any prospect of doing it at a profitable rate

The 10 Cases of Cambric fancies 524 @ 533 are good patterns & will
soon be all sold we must here observe that the assortment of 474 @ 483
pr Camoena would be preferred by all our Customers if it were not
for one very bad pattern, of which we enclose you a small piece
for your government unfortunately there are a great many pieces
of this pattern in every case the pattern is very generally disliked, but
the ground of the piece enclosed is particularly bad & quite spoils the
pattern, all the other patterns in this assortment are excellent
the fancy ground work & stripes are very much admired. We find the
3 Colour fancies 534 @ 43 very dear for this style of print you had
better send in each case 30 ps of 2 reds instead of 3 & 10 ps of 2 reds
with a pink ground in light pin work 10 ps of 2 lilacs & 10 ps of 2

they are a description of Prints of limited consumption
You had therefore better pause in your sendings
of them until you see us making greater progress in
sales. We have also sufficient of the 1 & 2 Colors as

leave out the setts in the next assortment. we have
latterly [sic] been obliged to reduce our prices for the blue
grods with orange sprigs on account of other houses
having similar goods the same with those as 635
We beg to remind you of the necessity of paying
particular attention to the white in these Prints especially
in the blue Setts and the same with regard to Furnitures
as wherever there is much blue in your Prints the white is always bad
it is especially owing to this that Butterworth & Brooks Furnitures
are so much preferred to ours We are in want of white grod

may send us 10 Cases more as mentioned in

an entire new Set of Patterns—
We have just seen the 2 Cases Jobs in
the Piece & fiend the Work to be very imperfect,
we have therefore sold them at 250 Rs P y’d, We
enclose you herewith a few Pattns selected from
them which we think with a little alteration
in the colouring would be very saleable—
No. 1 is very good but the Pattn shows too much green,
if the trail were purple & white or Pink & White
instead of green & White it would be much better,
the cloth should be of a more ordinary quality.
No. 2 The colouring very good—
No. 3 Shows too much Green & would be better without
the small sprig & were the large green leaf
substituted by Pink.
No. 4 a good Pattn but the trail should have been
white & Orange.
No. 5 Pattern good but the trail to be alter’d like #4
No. 6 Pattern & colouring good, if you could produce
good work in this style we could sell easily
10 Cases P Month & we think out of the different
old Patterns you might send us an entirely new
assortment every Month, but you must take
care that the White is very good & the other Colours
distinct, do not send more than 10 Cases of the
same Patterns.

as W 61 for a month & also with the Neutrals
until we can give more encouragement, the
Style & Patterns are good, but the consumption is
limited to the late sales by Auction have had the
effect of considerably bringing down prices. There
is at present a scarcity of fine Prints.—

lately – dark grounds, which they have sold @ 380 rs

The five Cases W 76 @ 80 are sold by Pattern at
330 rs Pr y’d, those with ground Works are sold at
280 & 290 rs Pr y’d, we should not have obtained these
prices had there not been a scarcity of Prints of
the above qualities – Our customers wanted our
find Prints but something entirely different to
what we have lately received which they say bear
too great a resemblance to those as W 31 @ 36.—
We would advise you in future to send the
Patterns of all descriptions of Prints excepting the
very lowest quality in Cards instead of Books—
By this conveyance we send you Pattns of several
new good Styles of Prints with the prices at
which they were sold – also a shp [sic] of Harding’s
Furnitures to show you the exact shade of the
Chocolate, the last assortment W 21 @ 30 was by
far the best, but it might be improved by having
some Pieces of the color of the Pattern say five
reducing the number of Whites, but in a Shipment
of 10 Cases to vary the assortment.

will observe in what a variety of ways it is worked, all the
colourings are good, except in one or two instances the pink is
rather Pale. I think with a little alteration you might produce
an excellent set of Patterns – reduce the Size of the Pattern, but
still maintain the same distance, and the Pattern will be
more distinct, in some instances leave out the stripe altogether
work them with same colourings and with a similar variety
of fillings[?], and I think you would produce something entirely
difft with what you have lately sent- these Prints have been
much admired by our customers

Rio 1st August 1840
The five cases of prints pr [Lemnos? Lenmos?] are not liked by our
Customers and you had better therefore not send any more
of them – the stripes spoil the assortment. We had just
seen the 1 & 2 colors 81 @ 85 in the piece they look
very ordinary and at the cost very dear. Two coloured
prints much better in cloth have been sold here
at 180 p y’d. We have sold one case at 200 rs but fear
we shall have to submit to a lower price for the rest
You had better not send any two colours on so low a
cloth. We are surprised that these prints do not come
out much cheaper than R 706 as the cloths are an
inch narrower & much more ordinary in
quality. Our customers when they saw the patterns
only offered 180 pr y’d. We hope that after having
had some conversation with Mr Jordan you
would prepare a variety of different styles of Prints
as our customers are now beginning to ask whether
we shall continue to receive the article or not as in
the latter case they shall have to supply themselves
from other houses—We have sold the four remain
ing cases of grey prints D 492, 3, 4, & 5 @ 190 p y’d as they
were becoming very old stock. We have now very
few cases of the Furnitures to sell say 3 Cases and
we hope you will prepare us, a fresh supply assorted
according to our instructions of the 18th Ulto. We have
just sold one case of the 2 colours 86 @ 270 rs p & shall
be glad to dispose of the others at the same rate.
We think those as W 71 much cheaper at the price
and better prints.
-----------
Rio 12 August 1840
We cannot recommend you to repeat the shipment of Prints
as W 86 as our customers do not like the colourings – those
as W 11 are much preferred & we have still many enquiries
for them – We are at present quite unassorted in our stock
having only the Neutrals – Dk blue grounds & 2 cases as W
86 on hand – the 1 & 2 colors as 81 are sold at 200 rs p yd
the price is low but from the quality of cloth being so very ordinary
we could not possibly get a better price for them. We would
advise you in future not to send any 2 colors on so
ordinary a cloth. We could always sell a few cases of Bengal
stripes & Single color small checks of that quality
but without the small sets.

[Text in margin with summaries; refers to shipments p Fortitude, R [Furian?], Magnolia, Cora]
The fine Prints W 91 @ 95 are sold at 330rs p yd. We have kept
up the price on account of their being rather a scarcity of Prints
of this description in the Market. We are expecting a shipment
of different styles and should they arrive soon, we think we
shall be able to dispose of them to advantage. We have
now only 5 Cases of Furnitures on hand.
-----------
Rio 26 Sept 40
We have sold the fine Prints as W 116 @ 125 at
330 rs pr yd. the assortment is very good but our customers
now want an entirely different set of Patterns they complain
of our fine Prints always being in the same style & we
would therefore recommend you to send us something
of a different class of pattern & vary the colourings as
much as possible. The light grounds as 126 @ 135
are sold at 290 rs & 300 rs pr Yard. the assortment
would have been improved by leaving out the two old
small patterns & also the largest of the new pattern
(the largest sprig with a smaller one in the form
of a diamond, not the one with a small sprig in the
centre of a diamond) & we think the Cloth would look
better if it were not so much finished as the thread
is flattened too much. You might send us 10 Cases
monthly of them varying the assortment as much
as possible. You had better not send any more of the
two color Unions as 136. Our customers do not like the
coloring. The patterns of the 3 & 4 Color Unions as 141 are good
but you had better work them in such a manner as not to
show the White which our customers say gives the Goods
the appearance of being mildewed. the groundworks should
also be a good dark purple so as not to show the quality of the
Cloth. We have sold 10 Cases of them at 280 rs pr yd but are afraid
we shall be obliged to lower the price to sell the rest the assortment of the
4 Color fancies pr Cora 96 @ 105 is very much approved of but the cloth is too ordinary
We would advise you not to send so ordinary a quality except in Single Colors. We
have sold them at 290 rs pr yd you might send us 10 cases monthly but on a better cloth.
The assortment of 106 @ 115 is liked. We could sell 20 Cases of them monthly but
do not send them on more ordinary Cloth they are sold at 270rs pr yard.

We have not yet been able to dispose of the remainder of
the 2 & 4 Color Unions as 136 & 151 but we hope they will not long
continue on hand. We have had several enquiries for Furnitures
and trust there may be some on the way – We also want some
more of the Stripes & Checks as 106 we could sell readily 20 Cases
of them pr month as the assortment was much liked.
The new patterns as 171 are much liked by the few buyers who
have seen them, but we have not as yet had a single offer for them
& at the present time it would be quite useless to attempt
to force sales – The assortment of the 4 Colors as 181 is good
but the quality Cloth [sic] is rather too ordinary.
------------
Rio 17 Octr 1840
During the last few days there has been some demand for
Prints & we have succeeded in disposing of six Cases of the
fine Prints as W 171 @ 340rs pr yard & should there be no
arrivals from Liverpool very shortly we hope to sell the
remainder at the same price. The patterns are much
liked but if there had been a few distinct elegant sets
the assortment would have been improved. In future you
had better leave out the purple grounds as they too much
resemble the Unions or if you do send two or three pieces
let them be in 5 Colors & the purple not too deep.
The assortment of 161 would be preferred if there were none of
the dark purple grounds as the Buyers immediately find
them out & will not give more for them than for the
Unions & we were asking 290rs pr yd for them. The Buff
is rather too deep a shade. We have sold six Cases
of them at 280rs pr yd – those as 181 we are selling at the
same price as 161. We are still without furnitures
and during the last few days we might have
disposed of a few cases.

[Text in margin with summaries; refers to shipment p [Deirison?]]
The assortment of the fine prints as 206 @ 215 is not liked
so much as that of 171 @ 180 nor are the Cards so well arranged
for instance on opening tem we find 3 or 4 patches all of
the same Color which operates very much against the
sale of the goods. You should endeavour to let there be
as great a variety as possible of Grounds & Colors as well
as patterns shown at the opening of the Card. In this
assortment there are not sufficient of the fancy ground works
which are liked – We have at present only sold 1 Case of them
at 335rs pr yard & 2 at 330rs per yd but we have no doubt of being
able to dispose of them when there is any demand for goods. At
the present moment we could not find customers for them even
were we to reduce our prices – We have shown the patterns of
201 @ 205 to several of our Customers who do not at all approve
of them – they are a great deal too confused & the style
by no means new – When you us [sic] anything on trail always
take Care that the pattern is distinct whether it be
stripe set or trail & vary the Colourings as much as possible
We have had enquiries for Furnitures which we have now been
without some time.
-------------
Rio 26th Nov. 1840
We have disposed of the greater part of the prints as 236 &
246 at 220 rs pr yard – the assortment of the latter is much
preferred but you might reduce the quantity of the 2 Colors
say instead of 27 Pieces send only 20 Pieces which will make
them come a little cheaper – You had better supply
us regularly with them – You might send us 20 Cases one
month but in two Vessels & ten the following month.
In other qualities we are at present making little progress
but our Stock is not heavy – We hope you will not keep us
long without Furnitures latterly [sic] there has been a demand for
them. We hope the 6 colours of those you are preparing may
be very right. We have as yet only sold two Cases of the Fine Prints
[125; Page 211]

as 201 but hope to dispose of the others shortly, By this conveyance
we send you patterns of Butterworth & Brooks, fine Prints which
have been sold here at 360 & 380 rs pr yd – We wish to draw
your attention to the style of Pattern & also to the Colouring
on which account they realized the above prices – The finer
ground works are very good especially the lighter ones.
Some of the rainbow grounds are rather too dark in
pink grounds we ought to be able to do some business –
there are a great many of them sold here, but you must
take care the colors are bright & the White good – [Morris? Moons?]
receive great quantities of them & obtain 300 rs pr yard for
them – We expected to have received some white grounds
2 & 3 Colours as patterns – the Sets are small but good & might
be assorted with larger ones say in some Cases 20 large & 40 small
& vice versa – We also want some more of the Dark Blue grounds
but assorted with Pink &c as the patterns sent some time ago.
-------------
14th Decr 1841
We have now sold all our Dark Blue grounds & hope that we
may soon receive a different assortment say with Pink, green & White
our customers are beginning to be tired with all Orange Sprigs –
We have still on hand one Case of the Chintz Prints which
we hope soon to dispose of – the 4 Colors as 181 & 2 colors as 226
are all sold – the former were on too low a quality of Cloth
& the latter although much preferred are non [sic] too well
known to be liked – We should wish to receive a fresh
assortment of Patterns but the quality of the Cloth should
not be inferior to that of 226 – We have still the ten Cases
of fine Prints on hand as 256 but not despair of disposing
of them so soon as there is a general demand for goods
On the 3 & 4 Color Unions 191 @ 200 we notice that the
pattern Cards show something like mildew & also unperfect print-
ing & on examining the pieces we find the edges with yellow
spots & also in one pattern particularly imperfect printing as if
[125.5; Page 212]

the goods had been folded before the Colors were perfectly dry –
this is a great defect & in consequence we have been obliged to
make an abatement in price. We do not notice the same
defect in the pattern Cards of 266 @ 275.
We have very few of the checks & Stripes as 246 @ 255 on hand
& hope you will in future keep us regularly supplied with
them according to the instructions in our last respects –
We hope the next arrival from Liverpool will bring us some
Furnitures as well as some styles different to any we have
hitherto received

We expect before long there will be a general demand for goods
and that we shall be enabled to reduce our stock to a
considerable extent on almost every case of the Unions as 191
we shall be compelled to make an abatement for mildew
We are quite a loss [sic] to account for this taking place
as it is now some time since this defect as appeared
and which should it continue will materially reduce the
profit on the goods. The mildew shows itself in yellow
spots and is a very great impediment to the sale of the prints
The few customers who have seen the light grod two colors
as 276 approve of them but we have not yet had any offer
for them – The style of 296 @ 305 is good but the
patterns are rather too heavy & the largest is not
sufficiently distinct – You might have sent more
brown grounds of the same shade – say in some cases
5 Ps and in others 10 Ps – as the greater part of our
customers have not yet commenced making purchases
we have not sold any of them but we have no doubt
we shall soon be able to run off the greater part
of our present stock which consists of very saleable styles
We want some more of the Checks & Stripes as 246 with
which you should keep us regularly supplied as there
is always a demand for them – We are anxiously
waiting for the new Furnitures & hope to receive them in
some of the next arrivals from Liverpool.

[Text in margin with summaries; refers to shipment p Amelia]
The patterns of most of our styles are liked – those as 296
are less liked than any of the others – the patterns are too
heavy – the assortment of 336 is much better, the patterns
generally being upon a smaller scale – those pr Amelia are
the best you have sent us for time [sic] but in future we would
advise you to send some cases without any white grounds
say in 10 Cases, five without any white grounds – The patterns
of the Furnitures are very much liked but we are still
obliged to Complain of the white not being Clear, especially
where there is blue – this is a great objection as the other
colors never appear so bright when the white is not very clear.
Of these you had better send half without any white grounds.
If we had regularly received the one & two color Checks & Stripes
we might have disposed of a great many cases of them as
latterly [sic] there has been a scarcity of them & they are more
generally in demand than any other quality of Prints.
We find the purple Unions as 267 mildewed in the same
manner as 191 @ 200 – Consequently we are obliged to make
a serious abatement in the price – this was not the Case
with those as 141 @ 150 – The assortment of 326 @ 335 is liked
& at present we have not found any of them mildewed.
-------------
Rio 2 March 1841
Our stock of the Blue ground neutrals is now very small
and if you think the rate at which we have sold them such
as to offer an inducement to send more, we would recommend
you to prepare a few more Cases as soon as possible.
We consider the Cost very high looking at the quality of the
cloth & comparing it with other qualities – We have now got
quit of the rest of the Purples as 267 which we found were
becoming more mildewed every day – We also found that
the work was anything but perfect a great number of the Pieces
having Doctor Marks – When you next send Purples you
had better let the ground be of a darker shade, one half
of the Pieces showing two Purples & White & the other half red
the assortment of patterns ought to be different from the
last – We want some different patterns of a similar
style to 286 – Our stock of Furnitures is reduced to 3 Cases
but we expect we shall soon receive a fresh supply of them.

[Text in margin with summaries]
We hope you would alter the assortment after receiving
our latter of the 10th Feby and in some cases send
then brown grounds instead of six & reduce the white
grounds – In the assortment of fine Prints you might
send ten pieces brown grounds some of the same & some
of a darker shade than those in 296 – reducing the
number of whites.- Our stock of the purples as 326 is
reduced to two Cases – We could sell more of the same
assortment. It has been a great disappointment to many
of Customers our not receiving a supply of the one & two Color
Stripes & Checks which we have now been without some time—
We hope in future you will keep us regularly supplied with
them – Latterly there has been a demand for the Dark
Blue grounds assorted according to our instructions of the
26th Novr last – We expected to have received a style like
R 746 but with the alternations mentioned in our respects
of the 1st May 1840 Those as 336 & 366 are still on board
------------
Rio 13th March 1841
We are now very much in want of several descriptions of Prints our
stock consisting of one Case of Neutrals – 10 Cases of light grounds as
346 which are still on board & the fine qualities as 296 – 336 – 356 & 366
so that you will perceive we are quite unassorted – We hope before long to
receive some different Styles similar to the patterns sent some time ago
There is an immense consumption of 2 & 3 color’d Pinks on White & cover’d grounds
but the cloth should not be too ordinary – We have sent you some muster
by this conveyance from which you might make a selection of patterns
suitable to this description of Print. You should endeavour to
vary your sendings of Prints as much as possible as by so doing
we might materially increase our sales – for instance we ought to
have styles of Prints to sell at 210 rs or 220 rs pr Yard – 240 rs – 260 rs
280 rs – 300 rs pr yard – You have not yet sent us any dark styles with
exception of the Purples – From the note of goods sold enclosed
you will observe that we have given way a little in prices which
we found necessary in order to reduce our stock

The shipment by the Young Queen has arrived very opportunely
as we have been without Furnitures for some days – We expect
soon to be able to dispose of those just received – We think
the Pink & Lilac grounds are rather pale & the whites par-
ticularly in the blue blotches are not yet so clear as they
ought to be – We would recommend you in future not
to send any white grounds in the assortment of your finest
Prints as 356 & very few of the Blotch grounds – We are
sending you some patches of your own to show you the grounds Works
& Colors which have been very much liked – of course the
greater variety the better – The white grounds might come
on a little more ordinary Cloth – in the next assortment of them
you must leave out the very small trail & set pattern as it is
not liked – Our Customers were again disappointed at our
not receiving the 1 & 2 colors stripes & Checks – We thought
we should have received some Pink grounds similar in
quality to the patterns sent you some time since – they are very saleable.

we have sold them to one party at 260 rs P y’d

should be brighter.—

we have none to sell, the Assortment is liked.
We would recommend your keeping us well
supplied with different qualities to sell at
240, 260, 280, & 300 P y’d as of these there is always
a much greater Sale than of the finer Styles –
We want some more Furnitures as we have

Rio 17th May 1841
Our Stock of Prints is now getting very low & we
are anxiously waiting the arrival of the next
Vessels from Liverpool in the hope that we may
receive some handsome Shipments by them.
We have had many enquiries for the single & two
color Stripes & Checks & our Customers were much
disappointed at our not having some by the
“Princess Victoria.” The assortment of 486 @ 95 is
not liked by some of our Buyers who complain
of the colors not being sufficiently bright, but
we have no doubt we shall be able to dispose of
them so soon as they are dispatched, we have
already sold a few by Pattern at 290 rs P y’d.
The assortment 476 @ 85 is very much liked
the only objectionable pattern is the stripe, which
with the filling appears too confused, we have
sold 7 Cases of them at 330 rs P y’d, you might
send 10 or 20 Cases more of them but do not
put any filling in the Stripe Pattern.—
The party who bought the 10 Cases of Unions 466 @ 75
was much disappointed at their arriving
Mildew’d & we were obliged to make him an
abatement of 10 Reis Pr y’d to induce him to
remain with them, we hope shortly to receive ten
or Twenty more of them. We are satisfied that
the principal cause of their arriving in this state
is from

10 Cases as 456 @ 65 & 7 Cases as 486 @ 495, which

We have your favors up to the 1st of April P
“Queen of the Isles,” our Assortment of Prints as
been much improved by the Shipments P the Vessels
just arrived & we have already disposed of some
of them. The Style of 556 @ 65 is good
but some of the Pattns are not suitable, especially
the Trail Patterns, which make the Prints appear
a great deal too confused, there are also some
colorings which do not contrast well – The best
colors for grounds are bright & dark Chocolate, dark
Red & Black, with distinct sprigs or stripes where
lt blue, purple, Green & Red predominate – We
think you might produce the same effect at a
much lower cost by leaving out those colors which
scarcely show – many of the colourings in this
assortment are objectionable, viz, light red grounds
with salmon color, black ground with sage color
(especially the Trail Pattn) dark red with sage
color – We have sold the Ten Cases to one party
at 300 rs P y’d.—

are too small to produce effect & some of the
Colorings are nearly lost & the Whites not well
preserved. If you had substituted a bright
Green instead of those which scarcely show &
had the Springs been much larger they would
have looked much better, the best colorings are
Pink, light blue, buff or orange & green, but they
ought be very bright & when there is White it
ought to be very clear, which is not the case
in this assortment. We are selling the
Furnitures at 340 rs Pr y’d, the assortment is liked.
# 496 @ 505 are sold at 220 rs P yard the assortment
is good. The assortment of 526 @ 35 is better
than that of 476 @ 485 of which we have only one
Case left. # 546 @ 555 are sold at 270 rs Pr y’d if

the great difference in cost for if the price at
which other Houses have sold the Goods did not
answer they would not continue to receive
them. The consumption of Prints in this
Market has increased very much but it consists
principally of low qualities to sell at from
250 to 300 rs Pr y’d. We think if you were to turn
your attention to those styles you would find them
generally to leave a better result than the finer
ones. There is at present a scarcity of
white grounds to sell at 240 @ 280 rs P y’d. We
could have sold ten or Twenty Cases more of the
one & two Color Checks & Stripes a quality which
we should never be without. You have not
yet sent us any of those large distinct sets &
broad stripes similar to the Patterns sent you [sic]
some time ago. We think they would look well
with fancy ground Works & upon a fair quality
of Cloth. The Unions as 546 @ 55 have arrived
in very good condition, very few Pieces showing
the yellow spots, we could have sold 20 Cases
more of them at the same price, we hope the
next assortment will consist of newer Patterns.

Our last was the 15th Ulto.
Our Furnitures are moving off regularly. The
Assortment of 576 @ 85 is very good & the Whites
are much clearer than usual.—
We have shown the Patterns of 566 @ 75 to a few
of our Customers, who approve of them, but
there is by far too great a similarity
between them & 536 @ 45 & 376 @ 84, in each
quality you should endeavour to send a difft
class of Patterns – Our Customers remark that
all the Patterns of our Prints are like each other.
The assortment of 616 @ 25 is liked, but the
Patterns being the same as those just mentioned
prevents our selling them so readily as we
otherwise should.
The Patterns of 586 @ 95 look very well, but
we notice they come out dearer than the last
& we fear we shall not be able to get a better
price for them.
We hope you are preparing us some ordinary
Prints to sell at 240 @ 260 rs Pr y’d of entirely
different Patterns as the consumption of them is
much greater than that of the fine qualities.

such a Style to sell at 280 rs P y’d, as it is
we consider them cheaper & they are much
preferred to those as # 576. We have at
present only disposed of two Cases of them
at 300 rs Pr y’d, at which price we expect
we shall be obliged to sell the remainder, as
the “Antilla” brought out an immense
quantity of Prints. We expected before this
to have received more of the brown grounds
as 421 @ 4 in better Work as they are generally
a very saleable quality. You might
send us more of the Prints as 616/625
as we are now without them, the Assortment
was much liked & we should be constantly receiving
an assortment of that quality to sell at similar
prices – We hope before long to reduce our
present Stock of fine Prints & we shall soon do so
whenever there shall be a more general demand
for Goods – We hope you will turn your
particular attention to those Styles of Prints which
you can produce at a low cost so as to enable
us to sell at 240, 260, 280, & 300 rs Pr y’d.—

Our last was on the 13th Ulto. P “Hebe” since
when we have yours of 24th May P Columbus.—
During the last few Weeks we have had a
fair demand for Prints & from the quantity we
have sold, are again getting quite unassorted.
Our stock at the present time consisting of 456 &c
536 &c – 606 & 626 &c – as 516 we have still four
Cases on hand, which we are afraid we shall
be obliged to quit at 300 rs P y’d, as many of
the Colorings are not liked by our Customers.
Those as 636 are sold & we could now dispose
of more – The next assortment of these Prints
would be improved by your sending less with
the drab colour & Ten Pieces with the bright
Green, the patterns are all good & you should keep
us regularly supplied with the Style.—
In future we would advise you never to send
any White grounds in our best Prints, you had
much better send them separate, as when
we wish to raise the price our Customers tell
us that there are nearly twenty Pieces of White
grounds which they can buy at 280 rs P y’d
We are now without Furnitures, but we
hope we shall soon receive more, the
assortment of 576 was good but in some
Cases you had better send only Six Pieces
White grounds.- We have had several
enquiries for the one & two Color Stripes & Checks.
The Patterns of 696 @ 705 are very good
& we have no doubt we could have sold them
at fair prices had the assortment been without
the White grounds. we have sold five Cases of them
at 350 rs P y’d-- The “Pomono” still keeps out—

The Demand for Goods generally has been exceedingly
dull during the last few Weeks & in consequence
have been enabled to make very little progress in
the sale of your Prints since our last.—
Single Color Prints on an equally good Cloth as yours
in 676 @ 85 have been sold at 160 Rs P y’d & the same
House is expecting 20 Cases more of them – at the
Cost ours do no good at Rs 180 Pr y’d we have nearly
sold them all at 190 rs P y’d – If you had sent stripes
(not too wide) & single Color Checks instead of the
small sprigs, they would have been much more saleable.
You had better continue the same assortment of
Furnitures as 656 @ 65, they are gong off at 335 @ 340
Pr y’d-- The Colourings of 726 @ 735 are good, but
we now want a different set of Pattns, they are all sold
at 215 & 220 P y’d & we are now ready for a fresh supply
of them – The Assortment of 706 @ 715 although entirely
different from anything you have hitherto sent are not
generally liked by our Customers from being all of
the same kind of Stripe & also on acct of the price.—
The Bullet Pattn 756 @ 65 are not at all liked
they would have been much more saleable with
large or small Springs. The Assortment of 766 @ 75
is very good both in Patterns & colourings, although some
some [sic] of the Pinks are rather Pale we have at present
only sold [sic - left blank] Cases of them at 240 rs P yd – We hope we
shall dispose of the remainder at 250 rs P Yd we think
the Cloth might have been a little more ordinary as the Pattn
prevents the quality from being much seen, in the fine des-
criptions we are at present entirely at a standstill the demand
being only for the ordinary qualities.

prices in order to get rid of them – We have now only four cases
to sell of these as 766 which we expect to dispose of very shortly
at 250 rs P Yd – You might send us more of them & if the
Cloth were to cost 6 P Pce less & with a little finish we should
be able to move off a much greater quantity of them We want a
decent quality of print to sell at 240 rs P Yd – We have at present
only disposed of one case of the Striped as 706 at 340 rs P Yd - & expect
we shall be obliged to reduce the price considerably before we shall
be able to sell the remainder as the patterns are quite unsuitable
for many of the provinces – We do not intend to hold them or
the bullet patterns long if we find them generally disliked –
the latter are still on board – We sent you patterns sometime
since of pink grounds with distinct sprigs not too small
of a much deeper shade of pink & showing a clear white
& bright yellow on a fair quality of cloth which is a very
saleable style & constantly received by several houses here.
We will endeavour to procure musters of some very good
patterns which have been lately received – in future we
should wish you never to send any white grounds in any of the
fine styles – always send them separate & on a little
more ordinary cloth – There is not yet any demand for
the fine prints – We expected you would have kept us
regularly supplied with the Brown grounds as 421 – the
style is always a saleable one—

These Pattns are good for the Style, but would be improved
if the Size were reduced a little, & some of the Pattns to
be composed of a Stripe, three inches broad, of Pen Work or
some other light work, but at the same time the Sprig
to be quite as open & distinct as it now is but with the
addition of the stripe, the assortment of Colors ought to be
30 Pcs Pink, 15 Pcs Purple & [??] & 15 Pcs purple & Red – We also
think a good Style might be produced from a similar class
