BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Samuel Talcott was a 19th century resident of Gilead
in the town of Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut; census records listed him
as a farmer. Some of the documents in
the collection call him "Captain," and others refer to him as
"Deacon," a position he held in the Gilead Congregational
Church. Samuel Talcott was born in 1787
in Glastonbury, Conn. His parents were
Gad Talcott (1745-1830) and Abigail Root (1747-1808). A genealogy web site lists three wives for
Samuel Talcott: Harriet Warner (1795-1820), Hester Reynolds (1789-1827), and
Asenath Morgan (1803-1863). Samuel died
in November 1879.
Talcott had a number of children, most of whom are
represented in this collection, particularly in receipts for school
tuition. His sons were Henry Wait Warner
(1820-1900), Elisha Ely (called Ely, 1831-1858, died in Chicago), William
Stuart (1834-1898), Samuel Augustus (1838-1899), and John Morgan
(1841-1869). His daughters were Harriet
Hester (born 1827), Mary Elizabeth (1832-1867), Catherine Asneath (1835-1848),
A. Georgianna (first name listed variously as Augusta or Asenath, born 1837),
and Sarah Eliza (born 1843).
Brief biographical sketches of the people whose
estates Samuel Talcott administered are included in the description of the
collection.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Receipts, deeds, and other documents pertaining to
the family of Samuel Talcott of Gilead, Connecticut, or to his administration
of the estates of deceased neighbors.
About half of the collection is made up of receipts for Talcott's
expenses during the 1800s. Money is
spent on children’s schooling (including music and dancing lessons), newspaper
and magazine subscriptions, salt, flour, sugar, physicians, glass tumblers,
china cups and saucers, a sewing machine, refined oil, a wide variety of
textiles, and other things needed for the running of a household. Between 1816 and 1846, Talcott served as
administrator of several estates, keeping the receipts for the paying of debts
and the distribution of the property.
The balance of the collection consists of deeds, 1802-1815; some letters,
1826-1902; a few poems and short compositions; and a small number of other
undated manuscripts.
It is not known how materials pertaining to people
and places in Danbury, Connecticut relate to the Talcott family of Tolland
County. Included in these materials are
a bill from Union College for the tuition of Horatio Wildman, checks drawn on
the Danbury Bank, materials related to the Ryder family, and a high school
graduation program from 1892.
ORGANIZATION
The papers are divided by type (letters, receipts,

Folder 6: Estate administration: Elijah Dunham,
1816-1818 (acc. 90x80.609-.643)
Elijah Dunham (1782-1816) of
Hebron, Conn., was the son of Abiah Phelps and Simeon Dunham. At his death, he left his widow Theodosia
Blodgett with several children.
Samuel Talcott was an administrator
of Dunham’s estate and as such, paid bills and collected debts. The signers of the receipts in this folder
acknowledged payment of debts due to them; usually what was purchased was not
mentioned, but Abel Bissell had sold timber to Dunham, and John Graves was paid
for a pine coffin. Joel Foote submitted
a bill for purchases of flannel made in 1806-1807, and his bill was among the
last paid in 1818. Chester Blodget was
also paid in 1818 for a pair of tombstones.
George Tryon was paid for house repairs and making shoes. Several taxes were paid as well.
Folder 7: Estate administration: Anna Horton,
1826-1829 (acc. 90x80.644-.654)
Anna Horton was the wife of
Samuel Horton. She was born around 1746
and died in January 1826. In her will,
written in 1824, she names children Samuel Chester Horton, Lusinai White
[Lucina, Mrs. James White], Electa Brown [Mrs. Chester Brown], and Anna Horton
[who married William shortly before her mother died]. Mrs. Horton named Samuel Talcott as her
administrator.
One of the bills is from Samuel C.
Horton for work done for his mother April 1823-Dec. 1825, including mending
wall, plowing and sowing, butchering, providing wood, etc. John Graves was paid for providing a coffin,
and William Brown for digging the grave.
Folders 8-9: Estate administration: Chauncey L.
Root: deeds and documents, 1826-1847 (acc. 90x80.655-.665 in folder 8; acc.
90x80.666-.782 in folder 9)
Chauncey Langdon Root
(1802-1845) was the son of Thankful Shattuck and Edward Root. He was married to Cynthia Maria Sumner, and
they had several children, all of whom were minors when he died. Chauncey Root was a master mason, a
builder. He died in Nov. 1845,
reportedly from a fall from a factory building he was constructing in Ware,
Massachusetts. [See folder of letters
for letters to Root.]
Not all these papers deal with
Root’s estate. Of interest is an
agreement between Ezra Brainerd of Haddam and Root in which Brainerd leases a
quarry to Root for 8 years beginning in 1826.
Other documents record Root’s purchases of land from Jared Shailer,
Edward Root, David Finley, and William Buell.
Root also sold property to Lewis Parkess. A deed of 1846 describes the real estate
given to the widow Cynthia Root by her right of dower. It details which rooms of the house she was
entitled to, and the fact that she had right to the east side of the barn, with
the division line drawn down the center of the threshing floor.
There is a very large collection of
receipts pertaining to Root, many pre-dating his death. A number of these give hints about his work
as a mason. Board bills name men who
worked for Root. In one document, widow
Cynthia acknowledges receipt of clothing, furniture, household stuff, and
livestock. Another document records the
amount of money given to each child (John, Jane, Louisa, Emeline, and
Florilla).
Folder 10: Estate administration: Edward Root: 1843
(acc. 90x80.783)
This Edward Root was
probably the father of Chauncey L. Root; Edward died in Nov. 1841.
A document giving Samuel Talcott,
administrator of estate of Edward Root, permission to sell his real estate,
dated Feb. 18, 1843.
Folder 11: Estate administration: William Sumner, 1838-1839
(acc. 90x80.784-.818)
William Benjamin Sumner
(1761-1838) was the son of Elizabeth Mack and Reuben Sumner. He married Jemima Tarbox (1765-1837) and had
a number of children, including daughter Cynthia who married Chauncey L. Root.
Receipts include charges for
repairing shoes and dressing cloth.
Sumner’s children signed receipts for the money and goods (which aren’t
specified) they received from the estate, with married daughters signing with their
husbands. William Latham was paid for a
coffin; Jeremiah Post was paid for digging the grave. A short letter from H.C. Griswold of
Ellington mentions the gravestone for Sumner; as well, there is a receipt to
Griswold for setting the stone.
Folder 12: Estate administration: Ichabod Warner,
1835 (acc. 90x80.819-.821)
Icabod Warner (1801-1835)
was the son of Mary Talcott (1771-1857; a first cousin of Samuel Talcott) and
Icabod Mapes Warner. The younger Icabod
married Lucy Foster in 1829, and they had several children.
Three items: form appointing Israel
E. Hutchinson and John B. Hutchinson to appraise Warner’s estate; a receipt
from H.C. Griswold of Ellington acknowledging payment for gravestone; and
receipt from William Latham, Jr., acknowledging payment for coffin.
Folder 13: Estate administration: unknown estate
(acc. 90x80.822)
A financial statement about
settling an estate, including payment for an advertisement, expenses at an
auction, and purchase of a blank deed.
Jonathan Trumbull and Samuel Talcott were paid for their services. The deceased’s name does not appear, nor is
the item dated.
