BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Samuel Williamson was a silversmith in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1794 to 1813. He served an apprenticeship with Joseph Lownes of Philadelphia.  In 1813 or 1814 he moved to Uwchlan Township, Chester County, Penn., where he bought a farm. Williamson died there in 1843.  He married Mary Evans on June 1, 1794, and they had several children.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Contains business records that illustrate Williamson's thriving business as a Philadelphia silversmith.  Includes both ledgers (1800-1811 and 1810-1813) and daybook (1803-1810), and--on microfilm--memorandum book/order book, ledger/cashbook, and loose documents.  Sample entries include: "To 6 Doz. Table spoons...202.14;" "To 6 Foot of Gold Chain...12.00;" "To Plain Coffee pot...83.57;" "To 1 Mustard Spoon...1.26;" "To 10 boxes of Sugar;" "To Sundries as per Adventure to Antigua...120.00;" "To Mounting Topaz...6.00;" "To Mending bowl...1.25;" "To One Thimble...0.40."  Papers thus show Williamson's involvement in creating and repairing objects of precious metals, his investing in import/export deals, and training other craftsmen who worked for him.

The papers on Mic. 434-A include birth, baptism, and marriage records, apprentice records, credit records, drawings and patterns for objects, as well as a memorandum/order book and a ledger/cashbook.  These items are not to be reproduced without permission from the owner (Chester County Historical Society).
