BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Louisa Gerhard married Gen. Henry du Pont on July 15, 1837.  They had nine children, including Col. Henry Algernon du Pont, Evelina du Pont, and Victorine du Pont Foster.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains correspondence among various Gerhard and du Pont family members as well as a number of books on religion.

 

 

ORGANIZATION

 

Collection is arranged in four series and within each box, folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title.  Series 3 holds correspondence; series 6 holds objects; series 8 holds publications, such as books; and series 9 holds social forms.  Series 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 11 are not represented.  The original finding aid to the collection, done in MSAccess, appears at the end of this finding aid.

 

 

PROVENANCE

 

Collection is owned by the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.  It was assembled over several years, from 1969-1978, by transfers and gifts from various sources: in 1969, from the clerical division of the Wilmington, Del. Office of Henry Francis du Pont; in 1972, from the office of the properties and gardens divisions at Winterthur; in 1973, from the H.F. du Pont House at Winterthur; in 1974, from the Coach House at Winterthur; and in 1978, as a gift.
