BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Victorine E. du Pont was the sister of Col. Henry Algernon du Pont and the wife of Antoine L. Foster, whom she married on October 18, 1877.  She was a founding member of the Garden Club of Wilmington and from 1911 to 1934 was vice-regent for Delaware, Regents of Mount Vernon, Virginia (the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Assn. of the Union).  Her interests were gardening and writing.

 

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

This collection contains correspondence with her husband and members of the du Pont family, books including a Bible, addresses, and a manuscript entitled “The Lost Garden” written in 1923.

 

 

ORGANIZATION

 

Collection is arranged in five series and within each box, folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title.  Series 3 holds correspondence; series 5 original manuscripts; series 6 holds objects; series 8 hold publications, such as books; and series 11 holds miscellaneous items.  Series 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, and 10 are not represented.  The original finding aid to the collection, done in MSAccess, appears at the end of this finding aid.

 

 

PROVENANCE

 

Collection is owned by the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.  It was assembled over years, from 1969-1978 by transfers and gifts from various sources: in 1969, from the clerical division of the Wilmington, Del. Office of Henry Francis du Pont; in 1972, from the office of the properties and gardens divisions at Winterthur; in 1973, from the H.F. du Pont House at Winterthur; in 1974, from the Coach House at Winterthur; and in 1978, as a gift.
