BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Henry Algernon du Pont, son of Henry and Louisa Gerhard du Pont, was born on July 30, 1838 at Eleutherian Mills, De. After attending the University of Pennsylvania from 1855 to 1856, he enrolled at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and graduated at the head of his class in 1861. By 1864, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army. He won a Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic efforts at the Battle of Cedar Creek during the Civil War. From 1906 to 1917, he was a U.S. Senator. Du Pont was a staunch Republican and served on many committees in Washington. He was the author of several military reminiscences and family historian. He was also a farmer and had one of the most valuable private Holstein herds in the United States. Du Pont resided on an estate named Winterthur, located near Wilmington, De.

On July 15, 1874, du Pont married Mary Pauline Foster of New York City. Only two of their children survived to adulthood, Henry Francis du Pont and Louise du Pont Crowninshield. Upon du Pont's death on Dec. 31, 1926, his son inherited the Winterthur estate.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Consists of correspondence, bills, manuscripts, and social materials dealing with politics, society, corporations, and the Winterthur estate. Much of the correspondence is corporate in nature relating to various financial interests, including local railroad companies.

Collection is arranged in nine series and within each box, folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title. Series 2 contains corporate records; series 3 holds correspondence; series 4 holds governmental materials; series 5 original manuscripts; series 6 holds objects; series 8 holds publications, such as books; series 9 contains social forms; series 10 telegrams; and series 11 holds miscellaneous items. The original finding aid to the collection, done in MSAccess, appears at the end of this finding aid.

PROVENANCE

Collection is owned by the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum. It was assembled in 1980 by transfers from various sources: from the clerical division of the Wilmington, Del. Office of Henry Francis du Pont and from the H.F. du Pont House at Winterthur.
