BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Edward Howe Wales was the son of Salem Howe Wales and Frances Elizabeth Johnson and was born in New York City on May 28, 1856. He attended a private day school in the city and graduated from Columbia University in 1877. On December 17, 1885 he married Ruth Holmes Hawks; they had one daughter, Ruth, who married Henry Francis du Pont. Wales was associated with his father in patent work and became an assistant examiner in the U.S. Patent Office. About 1880, he became a stockbroker. During World War I, Wales served as a Lieutenant Commander in U.S. Naval Intelligence. His hobby was yachting.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Consists of correspondence, a letter book, diaries, genealogical materials, and photographs that reflect the family relationships, financial concerns, travel activities, and genealogical interests of Edward Howe Wales. Correspondents include: Bishop Cicero S. Hawks, Blair Gist, Henry Francis du Pont, Ruth Wales du Pont, John Hay, Thomas Nast, Frederic Remington, Elihu Root, Elihu Root, Jr., William K. Vanderbilt, Army and Navy Club of America, Columbia College, Fifth Avenue Bank of New York, Goldfield Deep Mines Company of Nevada, Hyde Park Ice Yacht Club, Larchmont Yacht Club, Metropolitan Club, New York Club, and the White Star Line. Also included are engineering and artistic drawings done by Wales and passenger lists for the White Star Liner, Germanic (1878), and the S.S. Minneapolis (1910). The collection also contains correspondence between Wales and Frederic Remington during Remington's visit to the Adirondack region of New York State, as well as an original drawing by Remington.

Materials from the early 19th century include letters collected by Wales, such as those of English poet and author, James Henry Leigh Hunt.

ORGANIZATION

Collection is arranged in three series: series 1 contains bills; series 2 correspondence; and series 3 contains genealogy information. The original finding aid to the collection, done in MSAccess, appears at the end of this finding aid.

PROVENANCE

Collection is owned by the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum. It was assembled over years, from 1969-1980 by transfers and gifts from various sources: in 1969, from the clerical division of the Wilmington, Del. office of Henry Francis du Pont and the H.F. du Pont House; in 1972, from the office of the properties and gardens divisions at Winterthur; in 1973, from the H.F. du Pont House and by gift; in 1974, from the Coach House, Gray Building and by gift; and in 1980, from the main museum building.
