BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
The
Chestertown House Corporation was a non-profit organization established in New
York State on March 12, 1930. The
purpose of the organization was to further benevolent causes, to promote
science, literature, art, history, and other departments of knowledge, and to
maintain and administer real and personal property for museums. The administrative office was located in New
York City and meetings were held at the law offices of Milbank, Tweed, Hope,
& Webb in Manhattan. The corporation
officially dissolved on April 12, 1951.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Consists of certificate of incorporation, by-laws,
minute books, and annual meeting notices documenting the formation and
dissolution of the Chestertown Corporation and, to a limited extent, the
operations of the corporation.
The names of its members and officers include: Beverley R. Robinson,
George W. Jacques, George E. Hite, Jr., Sinclair Hamilton, Donald MacKenzie, Henry Francis du Pont, J. Frank Otwell, and Henry K. Greer.
The 1930 incorporation papers document Henry Francis du Pont’s
intentions to establish Chestertown House, his Southampton, Long Island
residence, as a museum.
