BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

 

Francis Boardman Crowninshield was born in New York on April 22, 1869.  He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. and graduated from Harvard University in 1891.  In 1898, Crowninshield joined Troop K of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders and took part in the Cuban campaign of the Spanish American War.  On June 28, 1900, he married Louise Evelina du Pont.  His interests were painting, architecture and design, and boat racing.  He was one of the country's leading yachtsmen and was part of the American team that won the King of Spain's cup in 1910.

 

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Consists of correspondence and corporate and social records that document Francis Crowninshield's activities in Boca Grande, Fl. and Marblehead, Ma.  Correspondents include: William Marshall Bullitt, Boca Grande Corporation, Boca Grande Mercantile Company, and Chauncey Nash.  Of particular interest is a letter to Crowninshield from Franz Preuschen of Germany discussing America's possible entry into World War I.  Also of note is a catalog of the Francis Boardman Crowninshield Exhibition at the Ferargil Galleries in New York City in 1944.

 

 

 

ORGANIZATION

 

Collection is arranged in five series and within each box, folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title.  Series 2 contains corporate records; series 3 holds correspondence; series 4 governmental forms; and series 9 holds social forms.  Series 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 are not represented.  The original finding aid to the collection, done in MSAccess, appears at the end of this finding aid.

 

 

PROVENANCE

 

Collection is owned by the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.  It was assembled over years, from 1969-1974 by transfers and gifts from various sources: in 1969, from the clerical division of the Wilmington, Del. Office of Henry Francis du Pont; in 1972, from the office of the properties and gardens divisions at Winterthur; in 1973, from the main museum building, and in 1974,  as a gift.
