BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Archie McLean Hawks was the uncle of Ruth Wales du Pont, wife of Henry Francis du Pont.

 

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Consists of correspondence, postcards, note cards, and telegrams about Mr. and Mrs. Archie McLean Hawks and Ruth Wales du Pont.  The collection also contains an original manuscript, "Enchantment," written by Hawks that describes his 1870 train trip from St. Louis, Mo. to Bristol, R.I.  Correspondents include Ruth Wales du Pont and Anna Anderson.

 

 

 

ORGANIZATION

 

Record group organized into four series: series 3 contains correspondence; series 5 holds original manuscripts; series 7 photographs; and series 10 holds a telegram.  Series 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 11 are not represented.

 

 

 

PROVENANCE

 

Collection is owned by the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.  It was assembled over years, from 1969, 1973, and 1975, by transfers and gifts from various sources: in 1969, from the clerical division of the Wilmington, Del. Office of Henry Francis du Pont; in 1973, from the H.F. du Pont House at Winterthur; in 1975, as a gift.
