BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Alfred Craven Harrison was an attorney in New York.  He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H. and graduated from Harvard in 1936.  In 1938, Harrison married Pauline Louise du Pont.  He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United Stated Navy during World War II.  Harrison was a trustee of Winterthur Museum from 1949 to 1973 and served as its vice president from 1951 to 1973.

 

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

This collection  consists of correspondence, corporate records, and social records that reflect Alfred Harrison’s personal activities and involvement with the Winterthur Corporation, legal and financial matters involving the estates of Ruth Wales du Pont and Henry Francis du Pont, and the rental matters concerning a New York Park Avenue apartment.  The collection also contains a hotel bill from Claridge’s, a London establishment where Harrison stayed in 1962, a letter from Elise Bordeaux-Groult, a friend in Paris, and a telegram from his mother Alison Gowen. Other correspondents include: Gasparilla Island Dairy, Boca Grande Light & Power Company, the firm of Morris, Nichols, Arsht, and Tunnell, and the firm of Millbank, Tweed, Hope, and Hadley.

 

 

 

ORGANIZATION

 

Collection is arranged in four series and within each box, folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title.  Series 2 holds corporate records such as bills; series 3 holds correspondence; series 9 social forms; and series 10 telegrams.  Series 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11 are not represented.  The original finding aid to the collection, done in MSAccess, appears at the end of this finding aid.

 

 

PROVENANCE

 

Collection is owned by the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.  It was assembled over years, from 1969-1975 by transfers and gifts from various sources: in 1969, from the clerical division of the Wilmington, Del. Office of Henry Francis du Pont; in 1970, from the financial division of the same office; and in 1975 as a gift.
